Rockefeller Center – New York
During one of my visits to New York, I visited Rockefeller Center. It is one of the attractions of New York city, an art deco marvel consisting of around 20 commercial buildings covering 11 acres in midtown Manhattan. Named after the multi-millionaire, John D. Rockefeller, who leased the space for a commercial district.
Statue of Atlas
The statue of Atlas holds an interesting story. It is said Atlas resembled Mussolini, Italy’s fascist dictator and hence the statue was picketed upon its unveiling. And I thought controversies related to statues happen only in India. 🙂
Can you see Roman similarities in this statue ?
The arcade of Rockefeller Center is the most popular route of tourists. There were restaurants all over the place but the center garden makes way to the sub-ground restaurant area which becomes an ice skating rink in wintertime. At Christmas, the whole place is decorated beyond recognition.
The murals and mosaics have been wonderfully preserved and give a museum like atmosphere to your visit. When you walk around you’ll find some interesting art works gracing these outdoor edifices.
I saw this slanted pole in the Center. The pole with people on it was kept in such a way that it looked like people from all walks of life were ‘going to the moon’.
Walking to the Moon
How small it looks in front of skyscrapers. To capture this shot I had to take it at an angle.
I think it was a temporary structure at that time. I am not aware if it has become a permanent one since I haven’t been able to visit the Rockefeller center after that.
Danke je, I am planning to visit NY this summer. 🙂
Deepu,
Great !! Let me know if this structure is still there or not.
For how many days are you going there ?
Sure. It is going to be short. Spent a long weekend with some friends. I might just drive across the border. 🙂

Deepu,
Driving across the border ? Now you are making me jealous.
Prax,
I have already done that. Next month’s bill should see some changes. 🙂
The snap is beautiful. Should that be globe in his hands.
This post brought back memories. Years back, I’ve been to this place a few days after Christmas and seen it beautifully decorated, and many enjoying the ice skating. Brrrr..the freezing temperatures of New York in winter.*shivering*
Interesting.. Walking to the moon..the pic really gives that effect.
N I am jealous of you enjoying the monsoons. 🙂
my town !!!!!! I love NYC, my folks own a condo there so we always visit and hang out with atlas for days 🙂
thanks for the kind words about my blog 🙂
Hmm…moonwalk, huh? In memory of MJ perhaps…
I really don’t see Mussolini in Atlas! Must be me 🙂
Can you believe that I have never been to NY? Weird considering we went to New Zealand, Australia, Patagonia…! I have to find the time…
sounds fascinating….cant wait to visit it in person
🙂 thanks for the initial heads up about its history.
The statue of Atlas story is really interesting. The pole with people walking up it is so unique! Funny how a large statue can look so tiny next to a huge sky scrapper.
There’s so much to see and do in New York City — I hope you got to visit more than the Rockefeller Center, though it is an interesting place. The ‘Walking to the Moon’ art installation is fascinating, isn’t it?
Yes, I agree. Lots more to see. And I absolutely loved walking to the moon. 😀
