City of angels!

I have been to these parts so many times but to this particular city, never. Did I have chance of visiting this place? Well.. one must make their chances. I could have planned my itinerary differently. The fact is I have not been to Bangkok ever.

There are so many other places in Thailand that I always gave it a miss. Even now when I took a train for Langkawi, had I not alighted on time, I would have reached Thai border and of course beyond that. The train goes upto Bangkok !

Even now, as I am in Malaysia, the City of Angels (as it’s called in Thai), is only about a couple of hours away. When this thought came to my mind I started actually looking at what are 5 top things that would motivate me and my readers to travel there.

A little history first. Bangkok, from a small village in late 18th century was renamed to Krung Thep (City of Angels) and graduated to the level of Capital of Siam, because then current Capital Ayuthhaya (Named after Ayodhya of Ramayana) was captured, plundered and burnt down by enemies.

The actual name of the city then was “Krung thep mahanakhon amorn ratanakosin mahintharayutthaya mahadilok popnoparat ratchathani burirom udomratchanivetmahasathan amornpiman avatarnsathit sakkathattiyavisnukarmprasit“… whew!

Looks like a south Indian name ! 😛
The translation reads, The city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable city of Ayutthaya of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarm” (Vishwakarma?)

This alone is probably enough to get me packing.

No wonder most people prefer Bangkok, although no one knows where this particular original village is in the scheme of things.

Imagine, I board a flight from KL and start saying this name of the city and land by the time I complete saying it. 😀

Secondly transportation. There are so many options now in Bangkok, which makes a budget backpacker like me jump with joy. You have the Skytrain, MRT, Train link to Airport, boat along the river, River Taxis, tuk-tuks, Bike Taxis, Public bus and conventional metered taxis.

Thirdly, the shopping. I am told by most who have visited the place that this is the place for shopping, both street and for branded stuff. Even better than Langkawi in some ways.
Fourthly, In the Airport is a large and colorful sculpture of “Samudra Manthan”, Churning of the Ocean, which as per Mythology, among other things, gave Lord Shiva his blue throat.

Lastly, the world famous Bangkok night life. It is more to see how much of what I heard is true. I have no interest in checking it out. 🙂

Of course, Bangkok tourism has much more to offer. These are just my motivators. I will get to plan the whole trip in some time.
