Celebrating Chinese New Year

Celebrating Chinese New Year

If you ask me one reason why I like Chinese New Year, my reply would be that it’s very colorful and exotic. The streets and houses are decorated with red and golden lamps & lanterns of different shapes and designs, the markets are buzzed with all kinds of gift items, decorative pieces and flower and there is a festive mood everywhere.

The Chinese New Year traditions are many and have strong links to China’s 4,000 years of history and culture. Being one of the traditional Chinese festivals, Chinese Spring Festival is the grandest and the most important festival for Chinese people. It is also called Lunar New Year. People from different regions and ethnic groups celebrate it in their own ways.

Many people clean their homes to welcome the Festival. They decorate the doors & walls with red posters with poetic verses and the main entrance or front of their homes with red lanterns. It is also a time to reunite with relatives so many people visit their families at this time of the year.

People wear new clothes and send Chinese New Year greetings to each other. In the evening they set off fireworks and firecrackers, hoping to cast away any bad luck and bring forth good luck. Children receive their “luck” money.

Dragon Dance

Various activities such as beating of drums and striking gongs are as much part of this festival as the dragon and lion dances. The Chinese New Year is a national holiday in China and many neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.

Don’t you think it is similar to our own Deepavali festival? 🙂
Which country are you going to experience this exotic festival?
